Fiscale inspiratiebron Britse Labourpartij: Big4 grootste bedreiging voor onze democratie

Een van de meest bewonderde en gehate fiscalisten van Groot Brittannië is Richard Murphy, wiens ongezouten mening ook in deze kolommen wel eens aangehaald wordt. In de weekend-editie van The Times wordt de oprichter van het Tax Justice Network  uitgebreid geciteerd onder de kop: ‘De dagen van belastingparadijzen zijn geteld’.

 

Ook wordt beweerd dat hij de grote accountants een bedreiging van de democratie genoemd zou hebben – een beschuldiging die Murphy erkent en herhaalt in zijn eigen blog van vandaag. 

 

“If these firms have consistently acted to undermine the tax revenues of elected governments, which action has posed a threat to the ability of those governments to fulfil their democratic mandate, and  they have done so knowingly, being aware that some say that such undermining action is a necessary condition of constraining the role of government, then I believe it is quite fair to say that they represent the most significant, coordinated threat to the right of democratic governments to act as electors would wish them to do around the world. That the  same firms do  also, it seems from what I see,  take part in the design and implementation of new tax and corporate legislative reforms in tax havens simply adds to the charge sheet.”
